Gutzon Borglum. He started carving the mountain in 1927 and suffered a fatal heart attack and died in 1941. He worked on the memorial for 14 years, it was not completed when he died, but Rushmore historian Gilbert Fite believes that Borglum died with "the exalted feeling that comes with an ambition realized.
Lincoln Borglum, Gutzon's son, completed the work his father started.
